ChangeMakers : COVID-19 Edition

The University of Ottawa community has stepped up to the plate and done outstanding work during these unprecedented times. We are incredibly proud of them and figured shining extra light on their efforts was the least we can do!

Here are four groups and businesses with various ties to uOttawa who are making a difference during the pandemic:

Dairy Distillery of Almonte has altered their regular production of “Vodkow” and instead has been producing surface sanitizer and hand sanitizer to fill an urgent need in Ottawa and the surrounding area. They have delivered thousands of litres of sanitizer to the Ottawa Hospital and the Shepherds of Good Hope. Further, when Fulton’s Pancake House and Sugar Bush had to close down due to the pandemic, Dairy Distillery remained open to sell “Cream” a maple-vodka, cream liqueur after the product’s launch events were cancelled.

Thawrih has joined the ranks of other businesses who are shifting their production to much needed essentials during the pandemic. The Ottawa-based inclusive and modest sportswear maker has come out with masks and anti-microbial gloves.

uOttawa Medical Students have rallied to fight the global pandemic in more ways than one. They have been volunteering their time whether it be picking up groceries or providing childcare to families who need it. In addition, they have drawn upon their resourcefulness by gathering PPE from local businesses to be donated to Ottawa area hospitals.

uOttawa Makerspace has been busy making PPE for frontline healthcare workers. Using 3D printers and laser cutters, they have been able to produce face shields. The shields are being delivered all over the city to places such as clinics, hospices, and Montfort just to name a few.

Welbi is working hard to fight social isolation within communities of elderly citizens. Their software aims to assist recreation managers in monitoring residents’ activity levels in retirement homes. Additionally, the platform can be leveraged to better engage residents and provide peace of mind to family members.
