Faces of Entrepreneurship FT. Perla Habchi
I am a recent graduate from the Telfer School of Business where I specialized in Finance. I am currently working the Internal Audit field at the Government of Canada. During my university years, I fostered a great love for sustainability in businesses and found myself thinking of and looking for innovative ways businesses can shift to more sustainable practices in unconventional ways. That passion was ignited with one project in my third year of studies that also sparked an entrepreneurial spirit within me that has followed along in my career.
What does entrepreneurship mean to me?
Entrepreneurship to me does not follow the conventional definition we find in the dictionary. You do not have to own your own start-up or company to be considered an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship can be found in every person trying to make a change even if it is from within an already existing company. To me, it is almost synonymous with the word “innovative”. It is a quality that people possess when they work on finding new and innovative ways that make processes, products, and services efficient and effective.
How am I entrepreneurial?
I find myself entrepreneurial in many ways in my day to day life. I am always looking for gaps to fill in my field and always on the lookout to join committees that are committed to making changes and filling the needs in my field. I am currently working on the very first training and development strategy for Internal auditors in all government departments and the goal is to fill already existing gaps and ultimately help the Internal Audit community advance in their careers by following a clear path of skills development.
How does an entrepreneurial mindset contribute to your life?
My entrepreneurial mind has made me look at things differently. It has mostly made me more observant, critical, and detail oriented. I typically do not only settle for what is out there and I approach challenges and mistakes differently. It has allowed me to take risks and view mistakes as value adding life lessons that I can approach from various angles.
