The Making of An Entrepreneurial Mindset: Meet Your Hosts
Now that you know what an entrepreneurial mindset is and what the Entrepreneurial Mindset Certificate (EMC) is, let me introduce you to who runs the EMC program: Carter Barrett and Mirna Candé. Carter and Mina are your go-to people regarding all things EMC. They organize, host and facilitate the program, workshops and your EMC Brightspace accounts.
I got the opportunity to ask them some questions about themselves and their roles within the Entrepreneurship Hub (eHub). Take a look at what they’ve said to give you a bit of a better understanding of them and EMC as a whole!
Carter Barrett
To start it off, tell me a little bit about yourself: what year and program are you in, what are your title and main role for EMC and what made you want to join the eHub?
My name is Carter Barrett, and I’m in my fourth year at Telfer. I’m specialized in the Business Technology Management stream (BTM for short) and have been working at the eHub since September of 2020 when I started as a Program Coordinator responsible for managing the Entrepreneurial Mindset Certificate.
My journey with entrepreneurship started early in my University career. I joined uOttawa’s Enactus team, a student-run social entrepreneurship club, back in first year, and was immediately hooked into the entrepreneurship ecosystem. Since then, I’ve taken over running the team, and manage one of our social enterprises, a startup called Poly Plastics that sells small-scale plastic recycling systems.
Throughout my journey, there were many times when I wished I had access to the knowledge and tools that the EMC program offers. When the opportunity arose to join the team at the eHub and help grow the certificate, I knew it was a perfect opportunity to help other students build an entrepreneurial mindset and dive head-first into entrepreneurship!
What does an entrepreneurial mindset mean to you?
To me, an entrepreneurial mindset is an approach to situations that let you identify and make the best of any opportunity. It means having the skills and tools to innovate and create creative solutions in any situation, whether it’s your own venture or inside an organization. It’s taking initiative and adapting to challenges as they come. All in all, an entrepreneurial mindset to me is not being afraid to take calculated risks, try new things, jump on opportunities, and work outside of traditional norms, all while making the world a better place.
What workshop were you most excited about this semester?
I was most excited about the “Marketing your eCommerce Business” with Krysta Roney from Shopify. There are so many different aspects to digital marketing, and I’m interested to see them applied to a Shopify store!
Any advice to those who are beginning their entrepreneurial mindset certificate?
My best advice to you when you’re starting to build your entrepreneurial mindset is to take notes and apply what you’re learning in any way that you can. Whether that’s in your current job, in your projects at school, in your side-hustle (no matter how big or small), or in extra-curriculars, the best way to learn is to practice.
Last question, who do you think will win Season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race?
It’s so hard to say!! My bet on the top four right now is Symone, Utica, Gottmik, and Rosé.
Mirna Candé
To start it off, tell me a little bit about yourself: what year and program are you in, what are your title and main role for EMC and what made you want to join the eHub?
I am a first-year master’s student in Public and International affairs. I joined the eHub this semester as a Program Coordinator for the Build Your Own Career Bootcamp but also, I will be running EMC workshops on Tuesday afternoons. My desire to learn more about entrepreneurship and to do the prep work to start my own business led me to the eHub/EMC and my current position allows me to bring those same learning opportunities to students.
What does an entrepreneurial mindset mean to you?
I consider an entrepreneurial mindset to be an attitude because the mindset will embody itself into the actions that you take to advance your career and reach your goals. The mindset will lead you to the necessary tools to thrive in the workspace and to concretize your dreams.
What workshop were you most excited about this semester?
This semester, the EMC offers a wide range of interesting workshops, but I particularly liked to attend the one on February 24, Your Brand Matters. Your brand is the face of your company and a lasting impact on consumers. If you master the art of branding, the next steps will easily fall into the right places.
Any advice to those who are beginning their entrepreneurial mindset certificate?
Join the program with an open mind and an eagerness to learn. Sometimes, we are set in our ways to do one thing yet different perspectives can actually improve the process. The EMC is an asset for your self-development but also to your community.
Last question, who is your favourite couple on Married at First Sight?
Haha! I’ve been watching Married at First Sight for a few years now and this season I absolutely love Vincent and Briana! Vincent is an entrepreneur and Briana is an engineer. They make a power couple, care for each other and they look cute together.
