Katrina describes herself as an old soul at heart. According to her there is nothing more precious than to make and share homemade gifts with the world. Following the birth of her two children, Katrina decided to launch a knitting and crochet company named Nina Bella Co. Her online boutique features toques, cardigans, sweaters, mittens and more, all made from local materials. By pursuing this entrepreneurial endeavour, Katrina’s goal is to gain a sense of personal accomplishment, while proving that it is possible to be both a mom and an entrepreneur.

As a female founder, what are you most proud of?

As a female founder, my greatest pride is being able to start and grow a business while raising my boys. Ultimately, they are the reason I started knitting hats in the first place and I wanted to pursue entrepreneurship to be an example they can look up to and understand what it means to follow one’s ambitions.

If you could give one piece of advice to a young woman aspiring to become an entrepreneur, what would you say?

Start small and grow authentically. In the age of social media, it’s easy to buy followers but know it won’t hold up in the long run. What makes a business is the person behind the products. Show your personality. I also recommend finding and connecting with a group of other women entrepreneurs in the same niche. What surprised me the most is the support the maker community can offer. Even though we are all technically in competition with each other, we are our biggest cheerleaders.

Where do you see your business and / or entrepreneurial journey in 10 years?

In 10 years, I would love to be creating knitting and crocheting patterns for large companies. I hope my toques will always keep the world warm and, even better; they will be available to purchase in stores across Canada.
